Integral to the Department’s mission of “providing leadership in the stewardship of the environment is a strong Environmental Planning (EP) major. The Environmental Planning program provides a broad educational experience emphasizing an understanding of planning and management of the physical and cultural environments. Developing students with the ability to be competitive in the dynamic, and increasingly urban discipline of environmental planning and design requires a comprehensive strategic direction with strong philosophical underpinnings. Towards that end a conceptual framework has been developed. The framework argues that today’s environmental issues cannot be addressed without an ethical foundation and an understanding of foundational ecological principles. In addition, it also identifies open space, green infrastructure and innovative agriculture as the unique space in which the program is well positioned.
In short the EP program strives to consider our dependence upon natural resources and the legacy of our use of the land, in an effort to foster ethical planning solutions to current critical issues. The program is rooted in the science and consistency of the four principles of ecology. The program carves out a unique identity, one that promotes sustainability regardless of location, strives for social equity and envisions post-industrial landscapes with functional ecologies.
